The second Sunday Concerts that we presented from September through December have been a success. We ended the fall series with the Paint Creek Boys on December 9th. Even though the weather was a little iffy, we still had a great crowd. Outreach assistants Monica Crump and Delores VoVillia helped out at each concert. Also a thank you goes out to volunteers, especially Tom Suddeth, our designated photographer. (see photo of the Paint Creek Boys). The Friends sponsored the entertainment and the Outreach Department furnished the refreshments. Beginning in January, the adult department has a full line-up of entertainment as noted in our newsletter and on our website.

I do have a holiday book to recommend. It is called, “A Family Christmas” selected and introduced by Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John and Jacqueline Kennedy. Caroline shares poetry, prose, scriptural passages and lyrics drawing on authors such as Truman Capote, Mark Twain, Martin Luther King, Jr. and includes a letter to Santa Claus from Caroline as dictated to her mother. Jacqueline Kennedy always encouraged her children to read and as Caroline states, ” The liturgy and literature of Christmas teaches us that Christmas encompasses the miraculous and the tragic, the profound and the ridiculous, and always represents the connection to something larger than ourselves.” My own favorite in this book is “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote. It is wonderful!

Be safe this holiday season and Peace on Earth!

The Winter Library Newsletters have arrived and should be in your homes. As you will see, there is a lot of exciting things going on. Be sure and read about all of the stuff concerning Ernest Hemingway and the activities we have planned. Maybe you have some stories to tell us about your adventures up north. His family's cottage was located on Walloon Lake and I'm positive many of you have been in that vicinity of the North. I am from Marquette so I am very familiar wid' doze' yoopers! It doesn't take me long before I am into the dialect. If I get lonesome for adding "heh?" to the end of every sentence, I just call my brother or watch the movie, "Fargo". I think one of the best authors to write the perfect yooper dialect was Robert Traver (alias Judge John Voekler) who whote, " Anatomy of a Murder", " Laughing Whitefish", "Trout Magic" and "Small Town D.A. ", all set in the Marquette area, will get you laughing and thinking that you are a part of our great Up North.

I celebrated my 30th year at the library on November 1st. The changes, the growth, the technology and our community have all undergone a metamorphisis that is beyond comprehension. When I fisrt started at the library on M-24, there were 8 employees. The only librarian with a Masters Degree in Library Science was Director Mary Basigkow. We all answered reference questions, worked the desk sometimes for a full eight hour period and worked every Saturday plus two nights until 9 pm. I managed the Branch Library that we had in Gingellville located on Gregory and in the fire station building. The Gingell brothers, Frances and Harold insisted that we have a library in that area of the township and they even built the shelving and the circulation desk. Many good times were had by all in that building and there are some patrons that still rem, eber those good old days. It closed when we moved into our current library.

Be sure to come to the Paint Creek Boys concert December 9th at 2 pm. It will be fun to listen to this hown town group of musicians! The Friends are sponsoring the concert and refreshments will be served.

Talk to you next time, heh?

We have finally gotten a change in the weather to match the time of year. Only getting to a high of fifty five degrees today, after temperatures in the 90's a few short days ago. School has begun with football, homecoming, concerts and programs have also started with a vengeance at the library.
Don't forget that this Sunday at 2 pm, the BIG CHIEF BARBERSHOP CHORUS is presenting a program of Happy Trails and Country Roads. This is a free and refreshments will be served following the concert. This Pontiac/Waterford Chapter of Barbershoppers has been in existence since 1943 and began with a group of guys from General Motors. We are fortunate that they will be doing some songs from their annual concert last year and some from the upcoming concert in November. By the way, tickets for their annual concert wlll be on sale that day for $15. each. OTPL has been a part of this chorus for many years thanks to one of the founders, Bill Pascher, who lived in Gingellville for many years and always came to the library for inspiration on set design and songs from the turn of the century. Bill now resides in a nursing home and his heart is always with the guys for each and every concert!

Monica continues to do homebound delivery and has continued with her nursing home programs. See pictures below. The Senior Center library's hours have been extended to 3 pm and computer classes are in full swing.
