Orion Community Cable Communications Commission

The
Orion Cable Commission is a governmental body made up of nine members
appointed by Orion Township and/or the Village of Lake Orion. One function
of the Cable Commission is to make sure that cable providers follow the
requirements of the cable franchise and all applicable federal, state,
township and village laws.
The
Cable Commission meets at 7:00 PM on the second Thursday in even months at
the Lake Orion Village Hall. Residents are invited to attend these
meetings.
Another duty of the
Cable Commission is to administer Orion’s Public, Educational, and
Government Access channels. They have hired a non-profit corporation, Orion
Neighborhood Television (ONTV), to manage the channels and the public access
facility.

The
ONTV Board of Directors oversees the management of the ONTV studio.
The Board meets at 7:00 PM on the second Wednesday of odd months at the
Village Hall. The meetings are open to the public.
If
you would like to learn how to produce your own programs or simply crew for ONTV,
the first step is a one hour orientation. Orientations are scheduled
for the last week of each month. Please call or see the website for
specific days and times. Although orientation is free, you will need
to call or email to reserve a seat.
ONTV
offers classes in field production and studio production to residents who
have completed orientation. The fee for each class is $10. In the three
session field production class, residents learn how to use the ONTV
camcorders, tripods, and microphones. Shot composition, story boards, and
non-linear editing are also covered. Once the class is successfully
completed, equipment can be checked out, at no cost, to create programs for
ONTV.
All
crew positions are covered in the four session studio production
class: director, technical director, audio, character generator, camera
operator and floor director. In the final class session, class members
produce a program that plays on ONTV, Orion’s public access channel. Once
trained in studio production, residents are able to gather crew from other
certified ONTV volunteers and book the studio to create a program.
Certified volunteers are eligible to crew for programs produced by ONTV,
such as graduation, concerts in the park, and the sports series and more.
The
computer-generated message board that runs between programs on Public Access displays information about community events
and resources. Non-profit groups
can have a message run on the channel at no cost. Email
mboard@OrionONTV.org.
Local government meetings are cablecast on Orion’s government access (channel
20 on the Comcast system). The computer-generated message board that runs
between meetings displays agendas for local government meetings and other
important information provided by the Township and Village offices, and the
Lake Orion Police Department.
For
more information about orientation, video production classes, message board,
public or government access programming, call ONTV at (248) 693-3377, or
email ontv@orionontv.org.
Orion’s educational channel (Comcast 22) runs a message board
with information and a calendar of events for each school in the district.
School board meetings are cablecast and then archived for ON Demand playback
through the website.
